The Proactive Public Intellectual

This session will feature panelists in academia who regularly present their work publicly and to audiences outside their disciplines. The session will cover: Aligning your research values with a public presence and understanding the scope and limits of academic freedom and navigating the tenure track with a public voice; Building an online website and social media strategy; Pitching and writing op-eds for online and print media; Giving talks outside academia; Balancing this work with your research agenda and other responsibilities; Understanding the effects of the political environment on choices and strategies. By the end of the session, students should be able to identify their values and goals for building a public presence for their work.
