Survive and Thrive! A “New” TA Institute

Survive and Thrive! As a graduate student, being assigned a Teaching Assistant role for the first time–or with an expanded set of TA responsibilities–can feel daunting.

This institute provides graduate students with functional skills central to their success in their TA roles. Sessions and workshops during this institute are designed to increase TAs’ confidence around interacting with students, anticipating challenges and planning potential solutions, and effectively supporting students in their TA roles.

Sessions (1-2pm each day) include:

• Tuesday January 12 – Building rapport with students and cultivating student engagement 

• Wednesday January 13 – Ask Me Anything (AMA) breakout discussions with experienced TAs

• Thursday January 14 – Knowing Your Students: Supporting Student Diversity and Success
