Finding and Succeeding in Interdisciplinary Training Environments

November 11, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Interdisciplinary training is increasingly promoted by research teams and employers alike, yet not all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows receive formal training in working in an interdisciplinary environment. This interactive workshop will explore what interdisciplinary settings look like in terms of both coursework and research initiatives as well as the challenges and benefits of working in such settings. This workshop will also highlight one avenue for obtaining interdisciplinary training – NIH T32 training grants – which are designed to promote interdisciplinary training in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Attendees will learn how to identify T32 opportunities on campus and tips for preparing a competitive application. The last hour of the workshop will feature a panel of current and former T32 pre- and postdoctoral trainees who will share their experiences and tips for success in an interdisciplinary training environment. All graduate students and postdoctoral scholars welcome. However, focus will be on training in the social, behavioral, and health sciences.
